In response to increasing requests for more information on decentralized wastewater systems from the water and wastewater industry, Water & Wastes Digest has designed the Decentralized Wastewater Zone in order to address questions you may have about decentralized wastewater-related issues. Check out an article archive, product information, an FAQ and an Ask the Experts section.

The decentralized wastewater process works when raw wastes travel from the house to a tank where solid wastes are trapped. The tank disperses the remaining liquid waste into a main collection pipe rather than into the soil, as would happen with a conventional septic system. In the collection pipe, the liquid joins wastewater from other houses and flows to a treatment area, located aboveground. Finally, from the treatment area, the wastewater typically travels to a soil based disposal system underground.

This ongoing zone will be updated as more information is gathered to form a more comprehensive and technical source of information on decentralized wastewater.
