Back to School

Aug. 9, 2012

Summer into fall is my absolute favorite time of year. The air starts to take on that ever-so-slight, brisk chill; the sky is extra blue and you can almost smell the sharpened pencils in the air—along with apples—as school goes back in session.

With all of that inspiration, there’s no better time than the present to consider your own education as a part of the pumping world and realize that it never truly ends. Those who work in the moving water industry must always keep their pencils and minds sharp amid the varying needs of so many different applications out there—not to mention the constant pressure to stay innovative and energy wise.

To help accomplish this, associations like the Hydraulic Institute, the Submsersible Wastewater Pump Assn. and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers—just to name a few—are all of value. Associations work to develop industry standards and provide tools for application, testing, installation, operation and maintenance. Therefore, getting involved is a surefire way to expand the depth and breadth of your industry knowledge.

Another trustworthy source, of course, is Water & Wastes Digest’s supplement, Pump Source, which is here to help further advance you along. This issue features, for instance, the very informative “Going With the Flow” (page 8) about choosing the right pump for the job. We also feature an article on curing chronic pump failures (page 6), along with some other interesting application stories. I hope you will find some valuable takeaways inside these pages.

They say that this is the time of year to "clear away the cobwebs" from summer's leisure, so, readers: Refresh, renew and get back in the saddle to keep propelling innovation forth. Be sure to keep us posted on your findings and let us know what you would like to see featured in the next issue of Pump Source. Happy Fall!
