Insta-Valve 20-24 Isolates Potentially Dangerous Leak Under Railroad Tracks

July 8, 2021

Hydra-Stop’s solution stopped a potentially dangerous leak without disrupting service to nearby factories or businesses.

The Problem

On New Year’s Eve a leak was discovered within an industrial area busy with train traffic in Northern Indiana. The source of the leak was coming from a 24-inch pipe that runs underneath an active railroad track, creating a potentially dangerous situation.

With the leak threatening the integrity of the tracks, RMS Utility Services was tasked to resolve the issue as quick as possible without disrupting water or rail service within the area. RMS Utility Services called upon Hydra-Stop to deliver two 24-inch Insta-Valve 20-24 insertion valves to isolate the leak.

The Solution

The day after the New Year holiday, RMS Utility Services installed the first of the Insta-Valve 20-24s to one side of the railroad track, which was accomplished in just 4 hours.

The following day the second insertion valve was installed on the opposite side to complete the isolation. A railroad representative was on site during both installations to ensure the rail’s integrity — which was maintained. Additionally, none of the surrounding factories or businesses lost water during this process.

With both valves in place, RMS Utility Services was able to complete their work and stop the leak.

Results

Better Control: The Insta-Valve 20-24 insertion valve provided targeted control during emergency maintenance without loss of water to the surrounding area.

Cost Reduction: Not only were costs associated with shutdown avoided, like boil orders, loss of treated water and lab testing fees, but local businesses and factories also did not incur costs due to lose of production capabilities.

Long-Term Value: Both Insta-Valve 20-24 insertion valves remain as permanent, reusable control points for the local water utility, if needed.

“The use of insertion valves was vital to the success of this project. We were on the phone with Hydra-Stop during a holiday and was able to turn around this project swiftly. The Insta-Valve 20-24 was fast and efficient. We were able to achieve a full shutdown to the affected area, allowing us to safely make repairs.” Gary Hallaert, Field Supervisor, RMS Utility Services.
