The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Chicago District, Rep. Frank J. Mrvan, and Crown Point Mayor Peter Land marked the completion of a Crown Point Sanitary and Sewer Infrastructure Improvement Project.
The project is authorized under Section 219 of the Water Resources Development Act 1992, as amended by Section 504 of WRDA 1996, Section 502 of WRDA 1999, and by Section 108 of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2001. Section 219, as amended, allows USACE to provide planning, design, and construction assistance for carrying out water-related environmental infrastructure projects in select areas. Projects under this authority are cost shared at 75 percent federal and 25 percent nonfederal sponsor. This project has been allocated $1,650,000 of federal funding. The nonfederal sponsor, the city of Crown Point, provided a 25% cash match of $550,000.
“This project involved the construction of a new storm sewer system between Main and Lake streets, along with the expansion of the detention basin at Lake Street and Greenwood Avenue,” Land said. “We are grateful to the Army Corps of Engineers for their long-standing partnership with the City. This is the fourth project we have completed through the Army Corps’ 219 Grant Program, which uses federal funding to cover 75% of the total project cost. A special thank you goes to Congressman Frank J. Mrvan for his support of this project.”
The project provides improvements to the storm and sanitary infrastructure in the area of Combined Sewer (CSO) 005 in Crown Point, including improvements to an existing detention pond, storm sewer installation, and sewer rehabilitation. The project extended from S. Court Street to Lake Street near the Lake County Fairgrounds, with sewer rehabilitation was completed near Taft Middle School.

I would like to thank all of our partners, that ensured that projects like these are so successful.”
The contract was awarded to Grimmer Construction, Inc. of Highland, Indiana, in September 2021, for $1,564,372. Field construction started in June 2022 and is expected to be completed in November 2022.
