The Senate will vote on an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). According to E&E News, the amendment includes a compromise to address PFAS contamination.
The amendment includes proposed provisions that would require the U.S. EPA to regulate PFAS. According to E&E News, the substitute amendment comes from Armed Services Chairman Jim Inhofe. It would specifically require limits for PFOS and PFOA.
According to E&E News, the Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee recently approved a version of the same legislation. However, a provision from EPW ranking member Tom Carper to require EPA to define PFAS as hazardous does not appear in the amendment.
Those who approved this provision hope for a floor vote. According to E&E News, “more than 500 other amendments have been filed” for the NDAA.
In the House, the deadline for lawmakers to submit proposed amendments to the chamber's version of the NDAA is June 25 by 11 a.m., according to the House Rules Committee. According to E&E News, the measure is projected to be on the floor the week of July 8.
The House Armed Services Committee approved its version of the legislation after a markup session.
