Delaware Poultry Plant Contaminates Nearby Wells

Dec. 4, 2017
The poultry processing plant is responsible for high levels of nitrates

Mountaire Farms, a poultry processing company in southern Delaware, has provided bottled water to residents surrounding the farm’s processing plant and spray irrigation fields. The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) recently discovered high levels of nitrates in nearby wells and continues to test surrounding wells.

Already Mountaire Farms had a citation by the DNREC for wastewater violations involving excessive levels of nitrates. High levels of nitrates are dangerous to babies and pregnant women but are safe for cleaning or bathing. Mountaire Farms is currently only providing bottled water to impacted homes, but is working on providing a water treatment solution.
