Wisconsin Awards $6.9 million in Grants for Urban Nonpoint Source Projects

Wisconsin Gov. Scott McCallum has announced $6.9 million in grants to 43 municipalities for nonpoint source pollution control projects. The funds will be provided by the state's Urban Nonpoint Source Water Pollution Abatement and Stormwater Management grant program that is administered by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The funded projects will focus on preventing contamination of surface water and groundwater by stormwater runoff, as well as on developing and implementing stormwater and erosion control plans.

Typical projects include developing regional stormwater management plans, constructing detention ponds, establishing infiltration basins or wetlands, developing public education programs, and designing pollution abatement structures, according to the governor's office. Projects to implement structural pollution prevention measures may receive cost-sharing grants covering up to 50% of eligible construction costs, while planning projects may receive funding for up to 70% of eligible costs.
