July 18, 2002

Residents of the Rivière-des-Prairies-Pointe-aux-Trembles-Montreal-East borough are being told to boil their water for five minutes before consuming it after E.Coli bacteria was detected in the water network.

The area south of Sherbrooke St. and east of de la Rousselière Blvd. to the edge of the island and the St. Lawrence River.

A public health official says the strain of E. coli found in the water supply near the eastern tip of Montreal is not harmful to humans.

Seven people died and about 23-hundred people fell ill in Walkerton, Ontario after another strain of E. coli found its way into the town's water system two years ago.

Residents will be advised when the matter is resolved, a process that could take a few days, the city said.
