EPA Allots $1M to Aid New England Beaches

Aug. 1, 2002
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced $1 million in federal funding aimed at improving the water quality at New England beaches.

EPA officials gathered yesterday with state and local officials on the beach at Goddard Memorial State Park in Warwick, R.I., to announce the initiative, which includes federal funds for more frequent water-quality testing.

According to the EPA, 274 New England saltwater and freshwater beaches were closed at least one day last summer due to pollution.

The closings totaled more than 750 beach-days.
