Wastewater treatment plants would get money to protect facilities from terrorism under a bill passed today in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Passed by a voice vote, the bill would authorize $200 million in grants for water treatment plants to conduct vulnerability assessments and make some security improvements. The bill also authorizes $15 million to help small water treatment plants pay for technical assistance.
Rep. Peter DeFazio, D-Ore., had urged lawmakers to pass the measure saying that ``In the wake of September 11th we've learned the nation's wastewater treatment plants are vulnerable to terrorist activity.''
The bill is H.R. 5169.
