USFilter to Supply FullSep Condensate Demineralizer System for Power Station

Hitachi America, Ltd. of Tarrytown, N.Y., awarded a contract to USFilter to supply a Fullsep? deep-bed, high-rate condensate demineralizer system for Phase 3 of the Genesee Power Generating Station in Genesee, Alberta.  The coal-fired Genesee station is owned by EPCOR Power Development, Inc. of Edmonton, Alberta.

USFilter will design and manufacture the system, and will provide inspection, testing, performance and warranty for a complete condensate polishing system, consisting of the condensate polishers, external regeneration system and an automatic control system.  Engineers and purchasing personnel from Hitachi Power and Industrial Systems in Japan provided the technical review and contract negotiations.

The design incorporates three 50-percent condensate polishing vessels, each sized for a normal condensate flow of 2,376 gallons per minute (540 m3/hr), and a peak flow of 2,552 gallons per minute (580 m3/hr).

Says a senior engineer at Hitachi Japan, „We chose USFilter to supply the Fullsep? condensate polishers based on [the company‚s] long-standing experience with this technology and its ability to meet our design and pricing requirements.‰

The Phase 3 expansion will add 490 MW gross (450 MW net) to the existing plant, located about 50 miles (80 km) southwest of Edmonton.  It will be the most advanced coal-fired power plant ever built in Canada, and the first coal-fired plant approved by the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board in over 20 years.

The condensate polishing equipment is scheduled to ship in January 2003, and Phase 3 is expected to start up in late 2004.
