A ceiling tile manufacturer in L’Anse, Mich., reported a spillage of run-off wastewater into the Lake Superior shoreline. The spill has prompted an investigation by the state departments of Environmental Quality and Natural Resources.
The leak at BPB America Inc. was caused by a crack in a forcemain line that carries wastewater away from the plant and into treatment basins nearby. Company representatives told The Daily Mining Gazette that the spillage was an estimated 24,000 gallons of non-toxic waste from their production process, including clay, perlite and starch.
Tests performed by The Department of Environmental Quality did not show cause for alarm, and the Department of Natural Resources reported that the water is safe for swimmers.
Continued investigations will determine how BPB will take responsibility for the spill. The company might have to pay a fine, and will need to make precautions to ensure that there will not be another incident.
