The State Health Department has fined the city Aikahi, Hawaii, for failing to control the odor from the Kailua Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Residents of the area fear that the smell will reduce the real estate values in addition to affecting the quality of life.

According to KITV, the plant’s odor control system exceeded the hydrogen sulfide levels from Jan. 31-July 4. In addition, the plant had problems along its fence line from Feb. 3-June 24.

The city has 20 days to contest the citation.
