The Arizona Water Institute has announced funding for 11 projects. The money will support research and on-the-ground work on projects ranging from new water purification techniques to habitat protection along a local river.
Azcentral.com reported that the funded projects will be based at one of the state’s three universities and will include non-university partners such as Indian tribes, community organizations and private industry.
The institute, which opened for business in January aims to develop sustainable water supply solutions on a global level. The group was introduced by Governor Janet Napolitano in 2004, and is run by director Kathy Jacobs.
The first round of funding will distribute $461,000 among the projects. The state money was matched by more than $663,000 from other sources, as reported by azcentral.com.
The money will go to projects such as exploring new treatment options to remove pharmaceuticals from wastewater, and working with the East Valley Forum to produce a drought planning and aquifer-management project, among other things.
