Crews have been working on a replacement pipe for a broken sewage line that spilled more than 4.1 million gallons of sewage into the Buena Vista Lagoon recreation area.
Officials are not sure how much more sewage might have drained during the night into the lagoon through a pipe that contained a huge hole the size of two fists.
According to the North County Times, this spill might be one of the worst in San Diego County’s recent history.
The contaminated water signs have been posted along a mile of beaches, though officials report that the spill hasn’t driven people away from the beaches.
Glenn Pruim, Carlsbad's public works director, told the Noth County Times that the beaches are fine, as long as people don’t enter the water.
