Wyoming City Receives EPA Award for Upgrade to Water Treatment Plant

May 16, 2007

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency presented a Drinking Water State Revolving Fund (DWSRF) award to the City of Riverton, Wyo., for the rehabilitation of its water treatment plant that will keep its system in compliance with new surface water treatment requirements.

Riverton provides drinking water to approximately 9,900 residents. The Wyoming DWSRF provided the city a $1.5 million loan at a low interest rate to fund its water treatment plant project. Riverton will use the money to replace and upgrade existing filters, improve the waste handling system, replace an old air actuated valving system with a pneumatic system and equip the plant with corrosion and pH control systems.

“Riverton's proactive efforts will help avoid larger costs when the new treatment requirements go into effect," said EPA Region 8 administrator Robert E. Roberts. “This EPA award recognizes exceptional creativity in designing projects that promote sustainability and protect public health.

The Safe Drinking Water Act, as amended in 1996, established the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund program to make funds available to drinking water systems to finance infrastructure improvements. The program also emphasizes providing funds to small and disadvantaged communities and to programs that encourage pollution prevention as a tool for ensuring safe drinking water.
