AdvanceOnline, AWWA Launch Web-Based Training Site

Dec. 28, 2000

AdvanceOnline, Inc., a provider of Web-based training solutions to help organizations comply with environmental, transportation and occupational safety and health regulations, and the American Water Works Association (AWWA) teamed up to develop an online institute (awwa.advanceonline.com) that addresses the continuing education needs of drinking water treatment plant workers and distribution operators. AWWA implemented Web-based training to provide members with easy access to a cost-effective and reliable continuing education alternative.

The adaptation of AWWA’s textbook content created the first courses.

Water supply professionals worldwide now have convenient access to the up-to-date, accurate information they need.

"AWWA conducted extensive surveys and discovered that water utility professionals have great enthusiasm for Web-based training courses," said Jay Fermaglich, online learning program manager at AWWA. "The AWWA Online Institute greatly extends our reach beyond our existing on-site classroom and satellite teleconferencing training programs, and allows us to effectively train some 250,000 operators in the drinking water industry."

According to the American Society for Training and Development, the biggest single cost of training for organizations is the wages paid to employees while they are training. These wages add up to more than the cost of the training itself, which was more than $60 billion in 1999.
