AWWA Webcast to Focus on Maintaining Ductile-Iron Pipelines

To educate operators, utility and engineering professionals on the best practices of maintaining current and new ductile-iron pipeline, the American Water Works Association (AWWA) will host the webcast "Getting the Most from Your Ductile-Iron Pipelines" at 1 p.m. Eastern time, May 21.

An AWWA survey of utilities conducted in 2002 found that two out of every three feet of water pipe in service is made of ductile or cast iron. The webcast will cover the basics of ductile-iron pipe, including standard installation procedures, new developments in the application of ductile-iron pipelines, design measures and considerations and maintenance of larger diameter ductile-iron pipes from an owner's perspective. Attendees also will have the opportunity to participate in a Q&A with the panel of speakers.

Webcast presenters will include:
• L. Gregg Horn, P.E., President of the Ductile-Iron Pipe Research Association, a nonprofit organization that provides numerous services related to cast and ductile-iron pipe.
• John R. Plattsmier, P.E., National Technical Director for Pump Stations and Pipelines at HDR, and Chairman of the AWWA Ductile-Iron Pipe Committee.
• Jonathan M. Kennedy, P.E., Senior Manager of the Engineering and Projects Department at Tampa Bay Water.
