The Water Environment Federation (WEF) will present Nutrient Removal 2009: Sustainable Treatment Solutions from June 28 through July 1 at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, D.C.

Organized in cooperation with the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments and the Water Environment Research Foundation, this conference will bring together water quality professionals from around the world to discuss and debate the current state of nutrient removal approaches.

Water quality degradation continues as a result of stressors, including excess nutrients. While some researchers and operators focus on state-of-the-art approaches, others are grappling with new equipment and operational procedures associated with basic biological nutrient removal. These changes are being evaluated and implemented in an environment of higher energy costs and a need to have more sustainable operations.

Nutrient Removal 2009 will foster discussion and debate on the current state of nutrient removal; examine research, design and operational issues related to the topic; and provide a forum for the discussion of policy and management approaches to nutrient control.

Topics include practical limits of technology/ boundary conditions; biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal developments; chemical addition; phosphorus recovery; process inhibition; operational issues associated with compliance; analytical procedures; process control and optimization; process modeling; pilot testing; sustainable practices; various flow sheets; sidestream treatment; and cost/benefit considerations.

The conference is specifically designed for researchers; regulators; designers; manufacturers and their representatives; operators and managers from municipal agencies; industrial dischargers; and others seeking to understand the full picture of the latest developments and practical experiences on this important topic.

The advanced registration deadline for Nutrient Removal 2009 is May 13. Visit the conferences and training section of www.wef.org for more details.
