Grant Aims to Reduce Energy Waste in Detroit Water System

Great Lakes Protection Fund awards $1.48 million to Wayne State University to reduce energy use in the water system
July 23, 2009

Wayne State University will use $1.48 million awarded by the Great Lakes Protection Fund to reduce energy waste in the Detroit water system, the Chicago Tribune reported.

A team led by Engineering Professor Carol Miller is developing computer software to reduce energy use in the system.

The system serves 4 million people in southeastern Michigan and pumps 675 million gal per day in a 1,079-sq-mile area with 126 communities in eight counties.

Miller says most water pumps are currently controlled by people, who decide whether to run them or not based on experience, often resulting in wasted energy and water. She projects a reduction of 10 million tons of greenhouse gases and other pollutants per year, the newspaper reported.
