Aug. 31, 2009

Officials said Los Angeles cut water use by 17% in July compared to a year earlier, The Associated Press (AP) reported.

The city appealed to residents to conserve water as the southern part of the state faces a water shortage brought on by drought and restrictions on supplies.

Single-family homes cut water use almost 21%, multifamily properties cut use more than 8%, businesses usage dropped nearly 22% and government properties reduced usage more than 34%, according to the Department of Water and Power.

Sizable reductions in electricity use were also reported, according to the AP.
