American Water to Celebrate National Drinking Water Week

April 28, 2010
State subsidiaries nationwide will raise awareness through events and activities about wise water use and protecting drinking water

American Water Works Co., Inc., a U.S. water and wastewater utility company, announced its nationwide participation in National Drinking Water Week, May 2 to 8, 2010. American Water state subsidiaries nationwide will be raising awareness through events and outreach activities about wise water use and ways that consumers can help to protect our drinking water.

American Water’s activities are part of a national effort sponsored by the American Water Works Assn., which annually declares National Drinking Water Week. This observation is designed to raise public awareness of the fundamental need for safe and reliable drinking water supplies for public health, fire protection, economic development and the overall quality of life communities and individuals enjoy.

“While we at American Water are committed to investing in water infrastructure to meet current and future drinking water standards and ensure a high-quality water supply for the communities we serve, we must also be aware of how the actions of each and every one of us can impact our water sources,” said Dr. Mark W. LeChevallier, director of innovation & environmental stewardship for American Water. “Protecting our water supplies is a shared responsibility and we encourage everyone to do their part.”

Consumers can help maintain the quality and supply of our drinking water through the following actions, American Water said:
• Be conscious of your daily water use and take the necessary steps in your home to be water smart and help preserve this natural resource;
• Be sure that leaking pipes and faucets--indoors and outdoors--are repaired;
• Take care in the use of garden, lawn, garage or other home products and ensure that they inadvertently do not find their way into groundwater;
• Dispose of chemicals or other potentially harmful products properly and do not pour them directly into home drains, the sewer, street drains or the lawn.
