American Water announced that John Young, chief water technology officer and president of American Water Works Service Company, will speak at the U.S. Conference of Mayors Water Council. The Mayors Water Council meeting is May 12 to 13 in Schenectady, N.Y.
Young will give a presentation on energy management and alternative energy use in the water sector during the Energy and Water session. American Water operates two water treatment facilities using alternative energy--a wind-powered plant in Yardley, Pa., and a solar-powered plant in Somerset, N.J. The company also recently set a goal to lower its greenhouse gas emissions per volume of water produced by 16% by the year 2017, through greater pump efficiencies and other energy-reducing methods, as part of its commitment to the Environmental Protection Agency’s Climate Leaders partnership. American Water is the first water and wastewater services company to make this level of commitment on a widescale basis, the company said.
Young began his career with American Water in 1977 and has held a variety of executive positions including chief operating officer, vice president of operations and investment performance and vice president of engineering. An active member of several professional organizations, Young serves as chairman of the Design-Build Institute of America, is a board member for the American Water Works Assn. and the WateReuse Foundation, and belongs to the American Society of Civil Engineers.
