Black & Veatch completed western Singapore’s second Active, Beautiful, Clean Waters (ABC Waters) project at Jurong Lake, Singapore. The project enhances the public’s experience of the lake through with new features and amenities, and brings them closer to water. Tharman Shanmugaratnam, minister of finance and member of Parliament for Jurong Group Representation Constituency (GRC), opened the completed works to the public on Sept. 25.

A key feature of the ABC Waters Jurong Lake project was the installation of a 235-meter boardwalk and fishing deck, as well as floating wetlands along the southern promenade, that will allow the public to enjoy wildlife such as fish and birds, and appreciate a variety of aquatic plants. An outdoor viewing and performance stage with a seating capacity of approximately 200 also was constructed at the east end of the boardwalk, and is complemented by a dramatic 20-meter-tall fountain. Other enhancements include dedicated lanes for competitive dragon boat and kayaking events, as well as sport fishing zones and the installation of a shelter along the northern promenade.

National water agency PUB launched the ABC Waters program in April 2006 to transform Singapore into a city of gardens and water by turning a vast network of drains, canals and reservoirs into streams, rivers and lakes to encourage Singaporeans to get closer to water and cherish it as a precious resource. Ten ABC Waters projects are currently underway, with six scheduled for completion by the end of the year.

Black & Veatch is the Watershed Manager for the Western Catchment of Singapore. The company completed western Singapore’s first ABC Waters project at Pandan Reservoir in July.
