Organization helps low-income and disabled customers pay bills

Nearly 200 golfers gathered at Bent Brook Golf Course in Alabama last week for a golf tournament to benefit the Water Works Board of the city of Birmingham’s (BWWB) elderly customers. More than $70,000 was raised for the Help 2 Others (H2O) Foundation, which assists low-income and disabled customers with paying their water and sewer bills and plumbing repair costs.

The tournament was open to the public, as well as BWWB employees and the company’s consultants. The maximum number of participants was 200 and participation has grown each year, BWWB officials said. Each year, organizers try to raise enough money to cover administrative costs, which came in at just below $22,000 this year, and enough to fill the foundation’s coffers. The H20 Foundation netted $48,570 in donations after expenses.

“The H2O Foundation was put in place so that we can help less fortunate customers during these tough times,” said Mac Underwood, BWWB general manager. “Having a good turnout like we had at the tournament this year helps make that more and more of a possibility.”

More than 1,250 customers reached out to the H2O Foundation for help last year. The Salvation Army Birmingham Area command administers the funds for the H2O Foundation, which operates solely on donations. Customers can donate a specified amount to the H2O Foundation by adding $1 to their monthly BWWB water bills or by calling to make a one-time donation. Detailed eligibility guidelines are available on the BWWB Web site for customers wishing to receive assistance.
