Utility plans to deploy smart meters over next 10 years

Sensus and PECO, an electric and natural gas utility subsidiary of Exelon Corp., have finalized a contract for the purchase and deployment of the Sensus FlexNet Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) communications network and smart meters. The smart grid program will allow PECO to effectively enable outage management, distribution automation and voltage monitoring applications in a program that is expected to encompass more than 1.6 million electric customers.

The selection of the Sensus FlexNet technology will enable PECO to provide clear and reliable communications in a dense urban environment via Federal Communications Commission-licensed spectrum and support future smart grid applications. Work is underway to deploy smart meters over the next 10 years.

“This contract further illustrates our commitment to providing our customers with advanced technologies, products and features that bring their smart grid vision to life,” said Peter Mainz, CEO and president of Sensus.

PECO will leverage the Sensus AMI and distribution automation technologies to monitor and measure electric distribution and consumption on a single dedicated communications highway for all related utility applications. To date, more than 225 electric, gas and water utilities currently using the FlexNet communications system have deployed more than 8 million endpoints.
