San Diego Facility to Convert Wastewater Gas Into Natural Gas

New gas-recycling plant to reduce methane exposure in city and accrue monetary gains

San Diego officials began construction Monday on a $45-million city-owned facility at the Point Loma Wastewater Treatment Plant, according to a report on San Diego 6, Bay City Television Inc. Named Trident BioFuels Energy, the new facility will turn wastewater gases into natural gas, which officials plan to sell to San Diego Gas and Electric beginning in October.
The conversion plant will be the first facility in California to deliver gas directly into a utility’s pipeline and is expected to accrue the city a small monetary gain while cutting methane exposure to the environment.
“This recycling program will use existing San Diego Gas and Electric fuel lines to transport excess methane gas from the city’s wastewater treatment plant that will be recycled and used as renewable energy,” said Councilman Kevin Faulconer in an interview with San Diego 6. “This groundbreaking project is truly an extraordinary win for the environment, for Point Loma residents and the city of San Diego.”
