World Water Day Celebrates Water's Impact

March 22, 2016
This year's World Water Day, celebrated on March 22, addresses theme of "Better Water, Better Jobs"

This year the world celebrates how water is the key to livelihoods. The UN’s theme for World Water Day, celebrated annually on March 22, is water and jobs. Today, half the world’s workers—1.5 billion people—work in water-related sectors. And water solutions that work are essential to all livelihoods—restaurant owners, farmers, schoolteachers and doctors alike.

Safe Water Network has created over 800 jobs in Ghana and India. Entrepreneurs, operators, vendors, technicians and water distributors all help to ensure its 150+ water stations are delivering safe, affordable water every day. The safe water these small businesses provide also helps its customers run their own businesses and stay healthy to work and attend school.

The network looks forward to celebrating the power of water that works throughout the year. In August, it will host a session at World Water Week in Stockholm on practical solutions for small water enterprises in India, showcasing tools that allow a broad range of stakeholders, from entrepreneurs to government, to do their jobs effectively and efficiently.
