CDM Smith announced that Jim Kang, Ph.D., PE, has joined CDM Smith as a vice president and industrial water and wastewater expert in its Industrial Services Group. Kang brings nearly 30 years of professional experience in industrial water and wastewater treatment, innovative technology development, soil and groundwater remediation system design and operations and maintenance. His primary responsibilities in support of CDM Smith’s industrial practice will be to help clients identify, develop and implement high-quality, cost-effective solutions to accomplish their environmental and infrastructure goals.

Throughout his career, Kang has worked on many significant domestic and international projects, including a $1.2 million-per-year global clean water program at supply chain manufacturing facilities in China for a technology company; a water reuse and reduction project for a multinational conglomerate that achieved an 88% freshwater consumption reduction, well below the company’s mandates; and the implementation of an in situ bioventing remediation system that saved a major oil company millions over its previous energy-intensive soil vapor extraction and thermal oxidation system.

As a technical innovator, Kang has co-developed several groundwater treatment technologies—including advanced oxidation processes to destroy recalcitrant compounds—and has led soil and groundwater and industrial water/wastewater treatment workshops around the globe. His specialties include oil and grease removal, heavy metal removal, physical and chemical treatment, biological wastewater treatment, unconventional shale oil and gas produced water treatment, water reuse and various in situ and ex situ soil and groundwater treatment approaches.

Prior to CDM Smith, Kang was director of industrial water and wastewater services for Antea Group in Long Beach, Calif. Before Antea Group, Kang spent 25 years at AECOM and URS, where he held multiple roles, including global director of technology and industrial water/wastewater business line.
