Skimmer Uses Continuous Belt-and-Wiper System to Remove Surface Oil

Solar option allows the unit to be used far from electric service

Abanaki Corp. offers the Oil Grabber Model 8 oil skimmer with a solar option. The Model 8 utilizes a continuous belt-and-wiper system to remove up to 40 gal/hour of oil from the fluid surface. The belt, operating on a motor-and-pulley system, runs through contaminated liquid to pick up oil from the surface. After traveling over the head pulley, the belt passes through tandem wiper blades, where oil is scraped off both sides of the belt and discharged. The tail pulley has flanges, which allow it to roll freely on the inside of the belt without becoming dislodged. It requires no bearings and does not need to be fastened to the tank. If turbulent conditions exist, an optional tether-and-cage assembly prevents the tail pulley from being dislodged. The Oil Grabber Model 8 can be used in tanks with depths as shallow as 1 ft or as deep as 100 ft.

The solar option makes this unit ideal for locations far from electric service, such as mine sites, the remote corners of steel mills, food processing plants and rail yards. At times, skimming alone can reduce oil to an acceptable level of water purity. Depending on the characteristics of the liquid, it is possible for the Model 8 solar oil skimmer to reduce oil content to fewer than five ppm in water. The unit is used as a pretreatment before disposal, as well as in conjunction with coalescing systems and with systems where it prevents filters from prematurely blinding.
