Aluminum Dome Added to Port Arthur, Texas, WWTP

Addition is a part of the facility’s expansion project

CST Covers has designed, fabricated and delivered an OptiDome aluminum geodesic flush batten dome for the expansion of City of Port Arthur, Texas, water treatment facility. The dome was designed to attach to a 3.8-million-gal concrete tank built to serve Cheniere Energy’s liquefied natural gas facility on the Sabine Pass River.

“The project called for a roof that would span a large area while withstanding the elements—including hurricane force winds—and CST met all the requirements,” said Brandon Harrison, division manager at Allco Construction. “The aluminum dome is versatile in that it provides airtight protection along with efficient access and visibility.”

The flush batten OptiDome is an aluminum geodesic dome from CST. The Port Arthur dome is 202 ft in diameter and contains four vents, two hatches and a walkway for monitoring and maintenance.

Every CST aluminum cover is custom-designed to meet the specific requirements of each project and be engineered for any snow, wind or suspended load capacity, as well as span-to-rise-ratio. With the ability to cover spans of 900 ft or more, OptiDome offers a range of applications without beams, girders or columns.

Cheniere Energy is funding the treatment plant expansion, including the tank and dome. Allco was the general contractor, and Arceneaux Wilson & Cole served as project engineers.
