Se7en Wetlands is 1,600 acres of constructed wetlands built to provide tertiary treatment and final polishing to the City of Lakeland, Florida’s wastewater effluent. In addition to its use as a treatment solution, the acreage is also open to the public for hikes, birdwatching and running, which required coordination with the Lakeland Parks & Recreation Department, to ensure safety of the visitors to the city’s largest.

In this video interview, hear from Sarah Malone, Se7en Wetlands manager; Bill Anderson, Lakeland director of water utilities; Pam Page, Lakeland deputy director of parks and recreation about the city’s reasons behind the project and challenges it overcame to make it a reality. Additionally, members of the engineering firm that helped make the project a reality—Bruce Hall, SM&E principal landscape architect, and Jay Hood, SM&E director of landscape architecture—explain what makes the project special from a design perspective.
