Xylem Introduces Biologically Active Filtration System

Customized solution eliminates taste and odor issues in drinking water

 Xylem Inc. has unveiled a new drinking water treatment solution that removes challenging contaminants, including contaminants of emerging concern (CECs), at ACE 15, the American Water Works Ass.’s annual conference and exposition, taking place at Anaheim, Calif., June 7 to 10. Xylem’s Leopold Oxelia is a multi-barrier solution; an oxidation-enhanced, biologically active filtration system that enables the production of a safe and reliable supply of clear and biologically stable, treated water with no taste or odor issues.

In a survey conducted by the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Arizona State University, it was found that 16% of North American utilities experience serious taste and odor problems and spend an average of 4.5% of available budget managing taste and odor problems, predominantly caused by natural organic material (NOM).

As contaminants vary in different water sources, the system allows for customer-specific designs and can be tailored to cater for different treatment goals. A variety of technology options for disinfection and oxidation, coupled with biofiltration, can be selected depending on the biological and chemical contaminates in the source water, as well as the energy and regulatory requirements.

“Leopold Oxelia’s oxidation step can include ozone, ozone-based advanced oxidation processes (AOP) or ultraviolet (UV)-based AOP,” said Tony Callery, product manager for Xylem. “For example, if water sources experience pollution with taste and odor compounds and other micro pollutants such as pesticides and pharmaceutical residues all year round, ozone-based AOP should be considered. However, if the water source experiences seasonal contamination with taste and odor compounds and a high disinfection level is required, UV-based AOP should be used. Leopold Oxelia offers the flexibility to deal efficiently and effectively with a range of different treatment requirements, producing drinking water with high biostability. Higher biostability reduces chlorine demand in the distribution system and disinfection by-products such as trihalomethanes or chloramines.”

Leopold Oxelia has undergone several years of intensive testing with the Public Utility Board in Singapore. Xylem’s solution is designed to optimize capital and operating costs while helping to deliver safe drinking water meeting today’s regulations. The solution’s integrated analytics and feedback control provide safe, reliable and cost effective process operation. Oxelia combines Xylem’s Leopold filtration expertise with Wedeco’s UV and ozone experience.
