Canada Treatment Plant Takes Equipment Offline

Residents advised not to swim in area with discharge

Local wastewater treatment has affected Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada. Due to upgrades and construction, the city’s water and sewer utility has transitioned to chemically assisted primary treatment without disinfection, rather than secondary wastewater treatment with disinfection. The wastewater discharge affects where the St. John River intersects with the Nashwaak River. Residents were warned not to swim in the area.

"We've got a fairly significant upgrade happening here at the wastewater treatment facility," said Dan Harvey, manager of Fredericton’s pollution control division. "In order to connect and install some of the new equipment, we've had to take some of the equipment offline."
