The Philippines and South Korea to Collaborate on Advanced Wastewater Technology

June 29, 2018

The Philippines has received a proposal of cooperation from Daegu City, South Korea

Daegu City, South Korea has extended a proposal of cooperation project to the Philippines in order to explore advanced technology for wastewater treatment and water quality systems. The proposal was submitted through Daegu City’s Metropolitan Waterworks Sewerage System (MWSS)

The specifics of the proposal involves a government-to-government agreement. The agreement will oversee the development of advanced water technology, specifically aiming to improve the operational efficiency of water purification and wastewater systems. It will also make efforts to improve its improper sewage discharge system, as well as the installation of a new water purification system.

The agreement came as a result of rampant water pollution plaguing Boracay Island, mainly caused by the discharge of untreated wastewater.

“This is a welcome development for the Philippine water supply industry, particularly the MWSS, following close bilateral relations forged during the recent visit of President Duterte to Korea early this month,” said MWSS Administrator Reynaldo V. Velasco.

Regarding the improvement to the improper sewage discharge system, Velasco claims the proposal will offer diagnosis and maintenance of the area’s pipe network in order to stop future leakage and inflow of pollution sources. Water scarcity is hoped to be improved by the installation of the new water purification system, which will see small-scale systems installed in various areas dependent upon population size.
