Texas Water Utility Partners with Habitat for Humanity

Sept. 26, 2003

Tyler Water Utilities is teaming up with Habitat for Humanity to make home ownership a reality for families in Tyler, Texas.

Under the newly formed partnership, Tyler Water Utilities will provide free water and sewer taps for all Habitat houses built in the city of Tyler. The utility will also waive activation fees. This will save Habitat for Humanity up to $744 per home.

"Habitat for Humanity is a very worthwhile cause and we're happy to support their commitment to providing affordable housing to those in need," said Greg Morgan, operations manager for Tyler Water Utilities.

Anne Payne, executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Smith County, said the organization plans to build 10 homes in Tyler during the next year.

"We are very pleased with the City of Tyler Water Department's decision to provide water and sewer taps and service to all Habitat houses in 2004," Payne said. "This will be a beneficial partnership to Habitat and demonstrates the City's support of the work Habitat is doing to provide low-income families with simple, decent, affordable housing in Tyler."

Tyler Water Utilities provides water and wastewater services to more than 30,000 Tyler customers.

Since its founding in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller, Habitat for Humanity International has built and rehabilitated more than 150,000 houses with families in need, becoming a true world leader in addressing the issues of poverty housing.
